Above left: Baxter Farthing with his 1936 Ford car in Cleveland, Ohio in 1948. Above right: Baxter is shown 55 years later at home in Manassas, Virginia.(2003). I will give a few details as to how I located this 1936 Ford vehicle shown at left. I was working in Cleveland, from late 1946, some months after I got out of the U.S.Navy. In October 1947, I decided I would like to acquire a 1936 Ford sedan. This model was an extremly popular car in that time period. One Saturday morning, several of us were riding around east Cleveland, when suddenly I noticed a clean '36 Ford sedan up ahead of us. I told my cousin, (in whose car we were riding), to pull up along side of this car. As we got along side of it, I shouted over to the driver "WHAT WILL YOU TAKE FOR THAT CAR"?? He replied " WHAT WILL YOU GIVE ME"??", to which I replied,"$400.00", to which he replied, "I'VE BEEN OFFERED MORE THAN THAT"!! I, then replied,"$450.00" to which he replied : "OH, I DON"T KNOW ABOUT THAT". I then asked if he would stop so I could get a better look at it? He pulled over to the roadside and to make a LONG STORY SHORT, I purchased it for $450.00 cash!! The elderly owner had bought the car brand new in 1936 and kept it in his garage. It had 41,000 actual miles and was in like new condition !! I kept it several years. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED EXACTLY AS I HAVE REPORTED!!!NOTE; This website was established by my nephew, BEN FARTHING of LENOIR, N.C. |
