| This 1930 photo, taken at the 3 room VALLE CRUCIS PUBLIC SCHOOL, shows my sister, Frances Farthing, TEACHER, at back left. ( She was only 18 years of age ). This was her first term as a school teacher. She had completed 2 years at Appalachian College in Boone, N.C. In this early era, North Carolina permitted teachers, who had completed some college terms, (but had not yet graduated) to teach in the public school system. Our double first cousin, Glenn Farthing, is taking 3rd grade this school year. This was a 3 room school, therefore each teacher had students in 2 or sometimes 3 different grades. Later, I went to the 3rd and 4th grades at this location. Several siblings also attended this school location. Photo provided by Glenn and Martha Farthing. |
