This photo shows the one room school ( Dark Ridge School ) in the Fall Creek Area of Avery County, N.C. My sister, Frances Farthing, taught one term here in 1934. This was during the Great Depression that hit the United States in 1929. I went to school a couple of times with her. I was about 8 years old at the time. There was about 25 students attending here. A few years later, this structure was replaced by a modern masonary dwelling house. Frances had already taught school at 2 other public school locations prior to this school year. She taught one year at the Valle Crucis public school ( 1930 ) and two terms at the Matney Public school, about 4 miles from home. During this early era, North Carolina did not require teachers to have a FULL college Education. In the mid-30s, Frances completed her education at Appalachian College in Boone N.C. She then taught elementary education at Collettsville in Caldwell County. In 1939, she went to New york City and signed on at the New York Hospital where she took nurse training for 3 years. |
