| Two of my older brothers, Louis and Raymond Farthing, both joined the U.S. Navy in the 1930s. Raymond joined in 1935 and Louis in 1938. Raymond served for years on the battleship USS IDAHO, and also other navy ships. Louis was serving on the USS West Virginia when it was sunk at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. He jumped off the battleship, as it was sinking, and swam to nearby Ford Island as did several other Navy personel. Raymond served 20 years and Louis served 33 years in the Navy. | ||||
