Some time after we were there, Alaska constructed a hardtop road the 12 mile distance. The 2 tunnels were paved, in order to accomodate motor vehicles, except the RR tracks were kept to accomodate the rail travel.

| We ride the Railroad 12 miles to Whittier, Alaska. When we visited Alaska, this RR was about the only way we could take our vehicle to Whittier on the Prince William Sound. The RR runs from Portage, 50 miles south of Anchorage, and goes thru 2 tunnels before reaching Whittier. We drove upon the flatcar at Portage along with several other motor vehicles.
