MT. SAINT HELENS in WASHINGTON STATE. Upper photo, from 1988, shows some of the 250 square miles of trees that were blown down in 1980 when this mountain exploded, sending many tons of ash into the atmosphere. We toured this area in 1988 and drove to the end of the public road near the top of Mt.St Helens. Lower photo features a good view of the crater that shows how much of the mountain that was blown out by the force of the explosion. The X shows the areas where the ground has risen caused by the pressure underneath the surface since the mountain erupted in 1980. |
