Upper pic shows the remnants of a car that was blown here from several hundred feet away by the force of the eruption. The forest service left it here for the public to view. Records show that 57 people lost their lives in the explosion. Spirit Lake is shown in lower pic and has thousands of trees still floating after being blown here by the force of the eruption. Millions of tons of earth filled the lake after the mountain erupted, which, according to the forest service raised the lake level 100 feet. Harry Truman, who operated a fish camp on the lake, was covered underneath the tons of earth when the mountain exploded May 18,1980. |
