| We toured the facility in 1988. When I served on the Navy Cruiser, USS Amsterdam, we were tied up at a pier here in San Francisco in 1946. At that time, a riot broke put among the inmates as they took over part of the prison. A contingent of U.S. Marines were dispached to help put down the rebellion. From our ship, we could see the search lights and hear some of the gunshots, etc as the riot was brought under control. Lower pic features a cable car that we rode several miles. |
