My oldest sibling, Frances Farthing, is preparing to take a ride on "Bird", one of our work horses. She always loved to horseback ride and did so fairly often. This was probably during the 1940s period when she was director of nurses at Cabarrus Hospital in Concord N.C. Both of our work horses, Bird and Maude, were good saddle horses in addition to being excellent work animals. They were full SISTERS and were born and raised at Great Grandfather DICK GREER'S farm which was located one mile up the Watauga river from our homeplace. We used these two work mares on the farm until the mid-1950s when the farming operations ceased at the Farthing farm. |
