This barn served three purposes: We used it to hang part of the tobacco crop for curing, after tobacco was cut in the fall. ( we also had to hang some of the crop in the larger barn for curing). Part of the second level was floored and used as a place to store all farm equipment in the dry, during winter months. A roadway, at the left end of this barn, to the upper level, gave access, which made it handy for the horses to pull horse drawn equipment up to this level for storage. My father never let farm equipment stay out in the weather after harvest.
