This is a barn that Dad constructed in 1939, the year after we moved to this property from Valle Crucis, 6 miles up the river. Dad designed and built the barn, mostly by himself. I also helped wherever I could. This barn served three purposes: We used it to hang part of the tobacco crop for curing, after tobacco was cut in the fall. ( we also had to hang some of the crop in the larger barn for curing). Part of the second level was floored and used as a place to store all farm equipment in the dry, during winter months. A roadway, at the left end of this barn, to the upper level, gave access, which made it handy for the horses to pull horse drawn equipment up to this level for storage. My father never let farm equipment stay out in the weather after harvest. The third use of this barn was a dry place in which to keep the ewes out of the cold winter weather, especially at night, during lambing time, in January. |
