Top photo shows the first farm wagon that I built in the early 1950s. I had an electric welder and had learned welding in Cleveland, Ohio, some years earlier. I had a small workshop in the basement of the house at the GREER place, where I made this wagon. My dad had built the GREER house in 1946 after he took down the old original house that stood here many years. In the background is the old barn built many years ago by my Great Grandfather, Richard Greer. Also, shown in back, is the 1941 Chevrolet pickup truck that Dad purchased new in Boone, N.C. The retail price of this vehicle was $713.00 The bottom photo shows a " better" and lighter weight wagon I designed and built. As shown in the photo, some snow had fallen. The axles were two "front" axles from Ford cars from late 20s-30s models. I turned the axels over " upside down" in order to give plenty of ground clearance. Each wagon had the original mechanical brakes on the rear axle. I connected the brakes to an iron control rod, from which the operator could easly apply the brakes. These wagons weighed 550 lbs ( without the wagon bed)and would haul very heavy loads. I built and sold about 5 of these wagons and sold them for $90.00 each. |
