This is United States Navy Cruiser # 101, The USS Amsterdam. I, along with 60 to 80 other US Navy men, were put aboard this ship at Portland, Oregon, October 1945. A few days later, the ship got under way on the Columbia River,to the Pacific ocean and headed toward San Francisco. As the ship cruised toward the coast on the river, a huge log hit one of the 4 screws which were propelling the vessel. The screw was knocked out of line by this huge log. After we arrived at San Francisco, a decision was made to take the ship to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to be repaired, as all drydocks on the west coast were full of ships undergoing repairs. At Pearl Harbor, the vessel was put in drydock and spent 3 weeke undergoing repairs.

After repairs were completed, we sailed to San Francisco. This photo at san Francisco, California was taken shortly after we went under the Golden Gate Bridge. The vessel was tied up at a pier near the Oakland Bay Bridge for several weeks. There were about 1000 Navy personel aboard ship.
