Louis Glenn, Aunt Joy (born 1912 ), and Callie Glenn are shown in this photo. Aunt Joy was the youngest of 12 children. One son, Raymond Chester Glenn was born 1905 and died a few weeks later. Eleven children lived until adulthood. Grandfather Louis Glenn was a long time educator in western N.C. He taught 50 school terms in this early period when terms usually were about 3 months in length. In a newspaper article in 1932, long after he retired from teaching, he reported that he earned $18.00 per month when he started teaching and was making $25.00 per month by the time he retired in the early 1900s. Callie Greer was one of his students in her very early years!! |
